Iceland is a land of stunning contrasts, where glaciers meet volcanoes, and waterfalls tumble from jagged cliffs into vast, moss-covered plains. Black sand beaches line the coast, while geothermal hot springs bubble beneath the surface. In winter, the Northern Lights illuminate the night sky, and in summer, the Midnight Sun bathes the land in golden light. It’s a surreal place where nature’s raw beauty feels serene and untamed.
Tips for Iceland
Renting a Car (4x4 Recommended): For flexibility and to explore Iceland’s diverse landscapes, renting a car is essential.
I used Lotus Car Rental which provided reliable service.
Watch for Speed and Parking Cameras -Iceland has cameras everywhere that monitor speeding and parking violations. The cameras automatically read your license plate, and fines for unpaid parking or speeding will be issued directly to your rental company. Be mindful to avoid extra fees when returning your vehicle
Iceland is highly cashless, and cards are accepted almost universally - Be mindful of international fees with your bank.
Do not fall for the chase the northern lights tourist trap. You can easily track aurora forecasts for the best viewing conditions - https://en.vedur.is
Food is VERY expensive. Be prepared to pay $$ even for a basic meal.
The amount of daylight varies dramatically depending on the season. In winter, you may experience as little as 4 hours of daylight, while summer brings nearly 24 hours of sunlight, thanks to the Midnight Sun.
Icelandic gas stations are self-service; however, they may double-charge you. One is the correct price and the other is a temporary charge on your card (up to $200) that they later refund. To avoid complications, use a credit card rather than a debit card for fuel purchases. These practical tips should help you navigate Iceland smoothly while being mindful of potential costs and avoiding common pitfalls.
